Als achtjarige kwam hij met zijn ouders mee naar de boerderij op 'Bakkenes' te Lunteren.Na zijn huwelijkj woonde zij aanvankelijk te Renswoude maar verhuisde ca 1827 naar de boerderij 'De Gagelkamp' in Barneveld waar zij woonde tijdens de volkstelling van 1827 met hun kinderen Drees, Grietje en Annetje. In 1848 woonde het gezin op De Bakkenes te Lunteren, Jacob en Gijsbertje blijven daar wonen tot hun overlijden. Aanvankelijk boerde zij samen met Gerritje Bakkenes een zuster van Jacob, maar vanaf 1851 werd het bedrijf gesplitst en werkte Jacob en Gerritje elk op hun eigen deel. Jacob werd 13-01-1814 ingeschreven in de registers van de landmilitie als Jacob (Dries) Bakkenes zoon van Andreas Bakkenes. Bij loting (nr. 167) was zijn lengte 5 voet en 4 duim (ongeveer 1,59 meter) Hij is nooit in werkelijke dienst opgeroepen.
