Notes about Brian "Filus Goddard" Stapleton Jr.

The third Brian de Stapilton was only seven years of age when his grandfather died at Wighill, by which he became heir of Carlton. He had no sooner come of age in 1410 than his feoffees obtained a licence from the King to found a Chauntry in the Chapel of the Virgin at Carlton (which had been recent-ly built by Sir Miles of Wighill), to provide a Priest to say mass "for the King's health and the soul of his first wife Mary de Bohun, Countess of Derby," and for the health of the young heir and his feoffees; for which he gave a messuage and seven cottages, and 24 acres of meadow and wood at Cam-blesforth. Nearly the whole of Brian's short life was spent in military service.

At a very early age (for his daughter Elizabeth was born in 1404), Sir Brian had married Agnes, daughter of Sir John Godard,

Lord Beaumont's family, the Stapletons of Carlton, are descended from the eldest son of the last Sir Brian of Carlton and Wighill.
Brian Stapilton "junior," as he was called, married Elizabeth, daughter, and eventually one of the heiresses of Sir William Aldburgh of Harewood; but died before his father in 1391, leaving two children
