Le 1er juin 987 l'assemblée des grands, réunie à Noyon, proclamait Hugues Capet roi. Le dimanche 3 juillet 987 Hugues Capet était sacré à Reims par l'archevêque Adalbéron. Pour assurer sa succession, il couronna solennellement roi son fils Robert en l'église cathédrale Sainte-Croix d'Orléans à la fin de décembre de la même année 987 (MR).
Son surnom Capet (surnom attesté à partir du XIè siècle, soit bien après sa mort) viendrait de l'abbaye de Saint-Martin de Tours dont il était abbé laïc et où l'on conservait pieusement la chape (manteau) de saint Martin.
