A Tailor all his life, and also a very good violinist, Henry Lawrence appears to have worked in his later years for the top outfitters Gieves & Co in Portsmouth - ultimately the firm that became the very exclusive and sartorial Gieves & Hawkes at No 1, Savile Row in London.
From way back, the original Portsmouth shop owned by Melchisedek Meredith ('Old Mel') drew many naval clientele and with Portsmouth a busy waterfront town and the centre of the seafaring world it became the place for maritime uniforms. 'Old Mel' tailored the uniform worn by Admiral Lord Nelson when he was killed in action on HMS Victory at Trafalgar in 1805.
The Portsmouth business was eventually sold in 1841 to Joseph Galt and with James Gieve as a partner by 1852, they serviced supply ships and troops overseas during the Crimean War. Gieve bought out Galt in 1887 to establish Gieves & Co and after his death in 1888, Gieve's two sons James W & John took over the business.
Henry Lawrence worked for them from the early 1890's onwards and being an experienced tailor, probably moved from Northampton down to Portsmouth because of the growing demand for his skills. By 1900, 52% of the world's shipping was controlled by Britain, and Gieves became tailor by appointment to the Royal Navy. Being dressed in uniform by Gieves became integral to officer training and 98% of cadets from the Royal Naval College were decked out in Gieves. He must have been kept busy!
