Notes about John James Willis

Your enquiry about J J Willis has been passed to me and one of the keepers of the heritage at Rothamsted.
Indeed J J Willis is well known as a trusted employee of Rothamsted Laboratory. He joined in 1862 and was still here in 1905 as Botanical and General Assistant, but does not appear in a photograph taken in 1908.. No doubt because of his character and long experience he was often entrusted by Lawes & Gilbert with the monitoring and sampling of the field experiments, setting up exhibitions etc. We have a photograph of him and should be delighted to share what we know, and to learn more of a member of staff here for more than 40 years
He crops up in the “Reminiscences “ of Edwin Grey, who was at Rothamsted from 1872 – 1922 and was initially placed under Willis,. By which we learn that he received his education at a private school in Wheathampstead, was good at drawing, planning out diagrams and charts and was a non-smoker, a member of the Allotment Committee. He was “of a most amiable disposition” , a fluent speaker – never confused or lost for a word or phrase.
He frequently contributed short articles to various agricultural and gardening papers, He was a bold clear writer and many of the 19th sample jars we keep were labelled by him.
“Several years before his death he was afflicted with a painful disease; after operations he would seem to recover for a time and would try to resume his duties, often suddenly failing”.
He was very active in the parish and many came to his funeral
