Paul graduated from Brigham Young University and afterwards married his sweetheart, Yvonne Wickham. He joined the US Navy, and served honorably as a LTJG during the Korean War. After the war he continued his education at Utah State University, receiving a MS and Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition. He worked at Rutgers University and at USU in research and teaching.
