Brief Outline of History
Father and Mother lived in Jensen, Utah. Father was on a Mutual Mission in Jackson Hole, Wyoming when I was born. I was born in Maeser, Uintah Co. Utah at my Grandparents home. Later Grandfather & Father owned a store in Jensen and we lived in a home at the side of the store. I have vague memories of my five years there. Going to Grandmothers for Thanksgiving & Christmas. Having apples so large I could hardly hold it. Of swinging on a large gate & when it swung shut I fell off. I figure I must have broken my collar bone then - at least it is crooked now. I have memories of making bricks out of mud & building houses with them.
My Grandfather Billings was a very kind hearted man and the story has come to me that he gave credit to so many people that when money tightened up Grandfather was unable to pay his debts to those he owed money for goods (line missing on copy - I assume that they lost the store and had to move away) . . . under the Homestead law where-by we procured a ranch in Sowers canyon which is located southwest of Duchesne. Fathers desire was to raise “blooded” horses and he also raised beef cattle. We were surrounded by a large area of grazing land and Father raised some hay & grain to feed the animals in the winter when needful. We also had a small garden
We moved from Jensen in the Spring after I turned 5 years old. This was quite a turning point in my life because Mother had always kept my hair in ringlets as my hair was inclined to be curly. When we arrived at the ranch, Mother said she didn’t have time to keep it curled nice, so she braided it and besides most of my dresses were buttoned down the back & my hair would get so tangled.
On our trip to the ranch after stopping for the night at Half-way Hollow and traveling quite awhile we discovered we had left our dog, Snide, behind. Father didn’t want to go back but we all felt so badly, so Father hooked one of the horses from the wagon and went back to get our dog. In the little cabin where we camped, someone discovered a great big snake, about the largest one I had ever seen anchored at the top of the wall against the ceiling.
I guess that it took us several days to travel with a team and wagon from Jensen to the ranch. Mother had lived rather a sheltered life in Jensen and had lived her early life in Maeser.
We had come over the dusty roads and camped out at night. When we arrived at the ranch Father said “How do you like it?” Mother replied “ I would sell the whole thing for 10 cents”.
About 1909 Father built a log home in the west end of Duchesne, consisting of 2 bedrooms, a large living room and a large kitchen. We spent a lot of time tearing rags and sewing the ends together and then had them woven in long strips, which had to be sewed together to form a carpet for the living room and one bedroom. This was laid with nice fresh straw under it.
