Notes about George Sells Vinge

George Sells Vinge (1809-1881) son of a weaver from Spittlesfield, London, was a very early settler of Melbourne, arriving in 1838. He moved to Shepparton around 1875 with his wife Elizabeth Hale and thier younger children to join some of thier older children who were already settled in the area. They lived at 162 Welsford Street, Shepparton, Victoria. George had the reputation of being quite a colourful character in the early life of the colony.
It was known that he had been a constable in Melbourne, appointed in November 1838; that had been Turnkey of the Melbourne Goal and later Watchkeeper at Williamstown Goal. He married Elizabeth Hale daughter of George Hale and Anne Fox in February 1842 at St. James Church Melbourne and left the constabulary because it did not pay sufficiently.
He became the second licensee of the Golden Fleece Hotel, the first to be built in Bourke Street, Melbourne, Victoria. Bushrangers were a great problem around Melbourne at the time and in April 1842 George was appointed the leader of a party of especially appointed constables to trace and capture the bushranger Fogarty. The mission was accomplished, Fogarty being caught at Captain Hunter's hut along the main road to the Plenty River and brought back to Melbourne hancuffed to George. George appeared at this trial and later received a citation commending his evidence.
George died in Shepparton on 22nd February 1881 and is buried in the Shepparton Cemetary. He certainly appears to have enjoyed life and one wonders at the forbearance of his wife Elizabeth who bore him 14 children and supported him through all his ventures.
