Wigerus Vitringa (1657-1725)

The leading Frisian seascape painter of the Golden Age, Wigerus Vitringa, isfinally honored with an exhibition. A number of his paintings bear the monogramL.B.,, leading to widespread confusion about the relation of Vitringa'sstyle and oeuvre to those of Ludolf Backhuysen. Vitringa had an unusualbackground for a Netherlandish artist. He came from a professional family andwas himself an attorney at law. Although he thought of painting as a hobby, hiswork is of very high quality; he was registered in the guild of St. Luke as apainter. For most of his life Vitringa worked in Leeuwarden, but from 1696 to 1706 he lived inAlkmaar. Theexhibition shows work by contemporaries such as Backhuysen and RichardBrakenburg alongside paintings by Vitringa.

Dr. Wigerus Vitringa (Leeuwarden, October 8, 1657 - Wirdum, January 18, 1725) was a Dutch painter of port and sea views.
Vitringa studeerde rechten aan de Universiteit van Franeker en promoveerde op 4 juli 1678 . Vitringa studied law at the University of Franeker and graduated in July 4, 1678. Na zijn studie vestigde hijzich in Leeuwarden als advocaat aan het Hof van Friesland . Afterhis studies he settled in New York as a lawyer at the Court of Friesland. Naast zijn werk als advocaat schilderde hij eerstportretten en later zeestukken. Besides working as a lawyer, he paintedportraits and later seapiece.
Vitringa verhuisde naar Alkmaar , waar hij zich geheel aan deschilderkunst wijdde. Vitringa moved to Alkmaar, where he is completely devoted topainting. Vitringa was van 1696 tot 1706 lid vanhet Sint-Lucasgilde aldaar. Vitringa from 1696 to1706 a member of St. Luke's guild there.
Hierna keerde Vitringa terugnaar Leeuwarden. Below Vitringa turned back to Leeuwarden.Vanwege een ernstige oogkwaal kon hij niet meerschilderen. Due to a serious oogkwaal he could no longer paint. Hij leidde nog wel leerlingen op. He still ledpupils. Tot zijn leerlingen behoorde Tako Jelgersmadie meerdere portretten van Vitringa maakte. Among his pupils was TakoJelgersma multiple portraits of Vitringa made.
