[outsidemarriner.FTW] OBITUARY - BESSIE HARRISON 1892-1985 Bessie Jelana, daughter of Douglas and Lillian Harrison, was born April 21, 1892 in Dundy county, near Wauneta, Nebraska in a sod house on her father's homestead. At the age of 3(should be 5) years she and her family moved by covered wagon to Clay County. At an early age Bessie joined the Methodist church in her neighborhood and later joined the Christian Church in Clay Center. She attended Lincoln Business College and later was employed by the Bankers Like Insurance Company. She lived in Lincoln for several years and then returned to Clay Center. She was employed by the Old Trusty Office, Rippeteau Dry Goods Store, had a dressmaking shop with Sylvia Hughes. Among other places of employment in Clay Center was the Stockam Hospital, Ellers Store, as a cook in the school's first hot lunch program and the Lumber Company, from which she retired. Bessie died March 9, 1985 at the age of 92 years, 10 months and 16 days. She was active in church work and taught Sunday school Class for many years. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge and many other local organizations. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters and one brother. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Beulah Mohnike of Hastings and by neices and nephews: Maxine(Harrison) and Allen Wilkins, Clay Center; Noma (Harrison) Granger, Hastings; Rogene(Mohnike) Johnston, Lincoln; Wilma Mohnike Bekemans, Gig Harbor, WA.; Lawrence Briggs, California; Unita(Harrison) Thorpe, Denver, CO.; and Norris Thorpe, Strasburg, CO. She made her home for the past three years with Maxine and Allen Wilkins. Services were held Tuesday, March 12 at the Clay Center Christian Church with the Reverend Donald H. Burkum officiating. Interment was in the Clay Center Cemetery with McLaughlin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Ed Barnes. Casket bearers were George Wilkins, Robert VonSpreckelsen, James Mitchell, Gary Whitcomb, Dan Snyder, and Gary Briggs.
