1861 aged 6, living at Hitchin Road, Arlesey with parents, Charles and Emma Payne, two brothers and widowed grandmother, Elizabeth Payn. Name entered in census as Arthur. 1881 aged 16, living at 2 Princess Park Terrace, Toxteth Park, Lancashire and employed as a footman in the home of 57 year old cotton broker John Calder from the US. Worked in Liverpool as a butler for J G Rodger from 1885 to 1907.
