Notes about Alexander POPHAM

Son of John Popham of Huntworth (near Bridgwater) by his wife Isabel Knoyle (second daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Knoyle of Chinnor Manor), Alexander is described as 'Mr. Popham of the Middle Temple' in the will of his father-in-law Sir Edward Stradling (1476-1535) indicating which institution he received his legal training.

Popham served as Escheator in Somerset and Dorset, as J.P. in Somerset, and as recorder in Bridgwater. Receiving only the manor of Huntworth from his father, he acquired other estates during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, some of which he resold, and at his death he held the manors of Buckland and Huntworth and 60 houses in Bridgwater.

His will was dated Jun. 1, 1556 in which he nominated Sir Robert Stradling, Bartholomew Combe, and his brother-in-law Humphrey Walrond as executors, and as overseers Sir William Portman and his son-in-law Richard Michell. His remains were interred in the church at North Petherton, Somerset.
