Rootsweb message from Fran Fletcher: I have been trying to prove my line to Sgt John Harris and Dorothy for years. I notice someone is calling her Dorothy Calcott. George Calcott of I believe James city co if I remember correctly DID leave land to Dorothy Harris but it was Sgt Johns and Dorothy's daughter. Don't be hasty about coclusions of Sgt Johns family He was born in 1588 We have no proof of him being in Virginia much before the date of 1620 if then.
We do know he was on the muster in Va. with 2 infants and went back to London where a son was born John and since he was baptised immediately after birth he probably died there as the custom was to wait weeks before baptism and sometimes several months. We know he carried on a fairly lengthy correspondence with Sir Peter Courteen about affairs in the colony while he was still in England. If he married Dorothy at say age
24 he could have had children born in England, as early as 1613 who were left behind with family while he made the perilous trip to va. with his wife and younger children that he did not want to leave behind. Good candidates for these in slightly later Va records are an Alice Harris b 1613 who came on the Assurance de Lo in 1635. We know he had a son thomas Harris b c 1614 and who died in 1672 in Isle of Wight co Va. There is no record of Thomas marrying in Va. and he could well have been raised, educated and md in England before
coming to the colony. One thing for certain he was probably not one of the infants that came with John and Dorothy Then there is a Robert Harris b 1615 who came to Va twice which indicated he was somehow able to go back and forth to England as John did He came first in 1634 at age 19 and again on a passenger list in 1635 at age 20.
Sgt John had an Uncle Robert Kempe who md his fathers sister. and this boy could well have been raised in England and came to the colonies with his sister Alice in 1635. Alice having been possibly named for Johns mother Lady Alice Smythe. Then there is a Peter Harris whom I have traced down for generations that I have never been able to trace. a Henrico co record has an affidavit that he was born in 1618 He is never on a passanger list that I could find. Was he one of the two infants that came with John and Dorothy and who md a Michelle in Henrico left a will with son John and Robert and whose daughter Michell md a Gurganey (Virganey)
the other being Dorothy who was molested by a settler and whose trial about that put her birth at 1619/20 They then sailed back to England and the records confirm that their son John was born 1624 in a Mariners house and baptized immediately. I believe he died in England. Then I believe another son was born also named John which was a common practice in those days in 1627 in Va.
Sgt John was a burgess of Shirley Hundred Main in 1627-1630. We know he was dead by the 14 of Oct 1638 when a land transaction proves it. HOWEVER WE DO NOT KNOW WHEN HE DIED. A WILL HAS NEVER BEEN FOUND IN VIRGINIA. HE MAY HAVE GONE BACK TO ENGLAND AND DIED THERE. I believe that
this could have been entirely possible and should be checked out.
I also believe that the son Thomas Harris b 1614 could well have been educated in England md there and then came to the colony. From the best I have been able to find out Thomas was md twice first to an unknown and secondly to an Alice West who md John Sojourner after Thomas died.
I believe the Robert b 1615 is found in Va. records as having md and had two daughters Martha Harris who
md John Jennings and Mary Harris who md l. anthony spilltimber and 2. Mathew
Swan
There is an Edward Harris connected to this family but he was the son of Thomas and not born until c 1660.
This is background that I have told you has been unproved but I do have the passenger lists and the names do mesh. I want proof that George Callcott was Dorothy Harris Sr father I was leaning toward Sir Peter Courteen but either way we need proof.
by the way Sgt Johns aunt Dorothy and her husband Robert Kempe had a son Richard Kempe that held high office in the Va. Colony. Sgt Johns sister Mary md Giles Brown and that is also an early Va. family.
John Harris nb 1588/9 died 1638 Also known in colonial records as Sgt John Harris of Virginia. He md by 1614 location unknown Dorothy _________ (perhaps Courteen as he had close dealings with Sir Peter Courteen of the London Co.]
John inherited l,500 L from his fathers will and is known to have been in Va. then back in London where he had a son John born who was immediately baptized and is thought to have died immediately. He was back in Va. and known to have died by Octoher 1614. Whether in Va. or back in England. No will has yet been discovered. He did leave children in Va. No Will has been discovered for his wife Dorothy in either Va. or England
