Notes about Michael COOPER

He was baptised at Henlow, Bedfordshire on 9 Dec 1571.

He married Alice Squier at Henlow on 3 Dec 1593, who died before 15 Aug 1596 when Michael married Elizabeth Moorton at Henlow. With one or other wife he had a son Michael who is named in his will of 23 Aug 1597.

His will was dated 23 Aug 1597 - In the name of God Amen the third and twentieth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred ninety seven that I Michaell Cooper of Henlow in the county of Bedford sick in body but of good and perfect remembrance God be thanked for it do ordain and make this my last will and testament in manner and form following

First I bequeath my soul to almighty god my maker and to the Lord Christ my redeemer and my body to be buried in the church of Ringsteed.
Item I give to the poor of Henlow and Ringsteed either of the towns twenty shillings apiece to be divided amongst them who most need it Item I give and bequeath to my son Michaell all properties that I myself have in the house and land which my father liveth in and hath in his own ………… and both the copses which are already surrendered to me and two other copses one of my lord of ….hold and the other of Mr Ar… hold being given in my fathers hand unsurrendered to me and an other copse which I bought of one sheppherd lathe being unsurrendered and a other strip of ground lying in Broom therefrom of all my goods and chattels not given and unbequeathed I give and bequeath them to Elizabeth my wife whom I ordain and make my lawful Executrix of ……. my last will and testament and William Selbie and Thomas Marshall ………… of ….. my ……. Testament that being Mr William Rogers Thomas Marshall and William Selbie with others ……….to me Michaell Cooper …….William Haggis …….at Allhallows day three pounds three shillings four pence Robert Perrett to pay the same day, three pounds six shillings eight pence John Grooom ..to pay the same day thirty three shillings four pence Michaell Conlet is to pay at candlemas twenty six shillings, John R…. is to pay eight shillings, William Cox the farmer is to pay thirty shillings eight pounds Thomas the Smith hath a cart of mine to hire and is to pay me for ….. a week after St Michaell five shillings, I have at Henlow nine and forty sheep and two calfs of my fathers I have in the same ……………….. which my father Moorton gave me at my fathers.

It is interesting that he left a bequest to the poor of Ringsteed, presumably Ringstead in Northamptonshire, 32 miles from Henlow. Did he live there? Or was one or other of his wives from there?

He must have died between 23 Aug 1597, the date of his will, and 11 Nov 1598 when his will was probated.
