Notes about John SCADDEN

"Western Flying Post, or Sherborne and Yeovil Mercury", for Monday, March 16, 1795.
"At Dorchester assizes, which began on Wednesday last, four prisoners were capitally convicted, and received sentence of death...." [including] "...John Scadding and Samuel Foster, for burglary in the house of Mrs. Kellaway of Evershot [ of which an account was given in our last paper]:-Thomas Foster, the other person concerned, was admitted King's evidence- John Mitten for stealing a silver watch, value 40s., the property of Jacob Durnford, is to be transported for seven years. ".

The Grace Kellaway that John Scadding robbed was a Grace Wallis of Evershot Parish. She married Thomas Kellaway in Evershot in 1784. He died about three years later aged about 40 years.

'John, son of John and Catherine Skadding Hannah'
Charged: March 9th 1795. Sent for trial by Sir W. Oglander.
Brought to prison March 9th. Jno Scadding, Chideock, shoemaker, married, age 34, size 5'6', hair dark brown, eyes grey, short smooth face, broad at the eyes, taper towards the chin. Nose sharp at the top. Lusty. Tried for burglary before Sir F. Buller Bart. Lent 1795 Assizes. Guilty. Executed March 28th
1795. Accomplices Thomas Foster, Broadwindsor, tailor, single, 23 Admitted evidence. Samuel Foster, Broadwindsor, tailor, single, 22, Guilty, death. Reprieved: to be transported for life. Put on board hulk in Langston, 30th August.

185 Death sentences led to 44 executions plus another 2 possible ones. Assizes were held at Dorchester and executions were carried out in the Amphitheatre there. Bearing in mind that many of these executions were for stealing....and that John's execution was the final one in Dorset [during the 1700s]....perhaps John Scadding may be considered to have been harshly treated....especially compared with those convicts who were transported to Australia [although that must have been far from pleasant at the time !]....and nowadays Australians are happy to find transportees amongst their ancestors !
