Notes about James LARMAN

1851 aged 3, living at Little Green with his parents James and Sarah Larman, and sister Mary. 1861 aged 13, living in Pirton with his father & stepmother, James and Martha Larman, and siblings Mary & Sarah, and half siblings Joseph and Julia. 1871 not in census with his wife and family, noted that he had deserted her. James mother died when he was very young and his father remarried. He was illiterate and worked as a farm labourer. He wanted a better life for himself and his family. In 1871 he left Pirton to look for work. In Woolwich he joined the army. Not being able to read or write he was unable to let his wife know where he was until he got leave. In those days the army was a lot stricter than it is now. Towards the end of 1871 he returned to Pirton to get his family and move back to Woolwich. In the mid 1870's he was sent to India with his unit. He was a gunner with the Royal Artillery. They had a much better quality of life despite the hardship of leaving family and the unfamiliar surroundings of India. Their 3 daughters Sarah Ann born in Pirton and christened on 9.6.1867, Elizabeth born in Pirton and christened on 16.5.1869 and Clara born Pirton 1.12.1870. were educated at the British Military School to a fairly high standard. It was while in India that Sara Ann met her husband John William Baines born 29.9.1859 in Thorney, Peterborough, Northamptonshire, England. James her father, and John her future husband, were in the same unit serving in Northern India. Unfortunately James died of TB on 29.9.1883 in Naini Tal India, aged just 35, just 5 weeks before his daughter Sarah married John Baines on the 1.11.1883 in Naini, Tal India. The following month Rachel and her 2 daughters Elizabeth and Clara returned to Pirton, England. On 15.9.1890 Rachel remarried a John Wiltshire a Widower and died in 1908. Elizabeth was a witness at her mothers wedding. In 1891 she is listed on the census as being a domestic servant and boarding with her sister Clara. Clara had a son James Thomas Lawman before she married his father Thomas Walker on the 19th June 1890 at Pirton. Clara and Thomas went on to have Bertram John born Pirton 5.1.1889 Beatrice May " " 25.11.1893 Florence " Islington, London 1897 Frederick " " " " 1900 This is all the information I have on Sarah Ann's family. Sarah Ann and John stayed in India moving to various forts in Northern and Central India until they returned to England in December 1880 for John to receive his promotions and to do several courses to advance his career in the army. John was a Bombadier with the army. Hariet Rachel Baines was born in Morar, Gwalior, India on 19.11.1885 John William Baines Jnr " " Bareilly, India on 8.3.1888 Florence Maud Baines " " Ipswich, England on 28.2.1891 Beatrice May Baines " " Woolwich England 25.10.1893 George Edward Baines " Kirkee, India 27.3.1896 Ernest Claude Baines " Kirkee, India 29.10.1898 Frederick James " Kirkee, India 19.6.1901 died in infancy in 1901 in Kirkee India Albertha Evelyn " Ahmedabad, India 10.8.1903 Albert Victor " Secunderabad, India 1909 After leaving England with his promotion to Sergeant Major John and Sarah with their four children returned to India in December 1893 where John served 26 years and 4 months for his king and country in India. Upon receiving his army pension in 1906 they decided to stay in India as they had a good life, the Army was educating their children and the older sons had also joined the Royal Artillery as boy soldiers. They had servants to help with the younger children and do all the hard work and as they had spent the major part of their lives there they decided to stay on. As John was only 46 when he retired from the army he continued to work and with the help of Sarah they ran the army canteen in Agra, India until they moved to Bangalore, India where they lived with their family until John died on 26.12.1938. Sarah then went to live with her youngest son Albert Victor who was living with his wife and family in India. After India received its independence the family decided it was time to begin a new life in New Zealand. However the daughters returned with their husbands to England as did most of the sons. Sarah left India in 1947 and with her son John William to come to New Zealand. SOURCE: email from Doug & Gloria Schultz 19 Apr 2008
