Notes about John GUDGEON

Not confirmed that John belongs to this family, however he is referred to as John Gudgeon junior of Maulden so this is a possibility. No baptism found in Pulloxhil, Maulden or Shillington.

Land tax was levied in 1783, in the parish of Maulden John Gudgin occupied land owned by His Grace the Duke of Bedford and was assessed the sum of 16pounds 10s 0d John was bequeathed 40 pounds by his father, John G of Pulloxhill (in his Will of July 1782) and 20 pounds by his stepmother Mary Gudgin (nee Neale), but without these specific inheritances John became a man of means, with tenant farmers on properties at Maulden. It is likely that the properties were also inherited from his father, who left an estate valued at between 600 - 1,000 pounds. when John's own Will was proved in July 1788 the value of his estate was in the region of 600 pounds.

In his last Will and Testament dated 10 March 1787, John bequeathed to his wife Anna Maria his two freeholdings in Maulden, one then occupied by tenant John Hawkins, the other by tennant Thomas Godfrey. On the death of his wife Anna Maria or if she re marries, the freeholding occupied by John Hawkins is to be given to his son Richard Gudgin. And the freeholding occupied by Thomas Godfrey to be given to his son John Gudgin, whereupon his sons Richard Gudgin and John Gudgin are to pay between them 105 pounds to their seven other brothers and sisters - Thomas, William, Anna Maria (jnr), Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth and Mary.

John died in June 1788 and was buried in the churchyard at Pulloxhill. The grave is on the south side of the church and the inscripition reads In Memory of John Gudgin who died Jan the ----- 1788 Aged 57 years The hand written Pulloxhill parish reg has the simple entry Gudgin burial John Gudgin, of the Parish of Maulden, Farmer, Bur June 18th 1788
