Notes about John WEEDEN

Militia List 1758, 1760-64: Farmer 1783 Poor Rate 1784 Church Rate, Land Tax Occupier and Land Tax Owner.

Correspondence from Peter Weeden: "In my early visits to Hals at Hertford it didn't take me long to trace back to John Weeden born circ. 1725 in Pirton. What I found, surprisingly though, was that his handwriting was impeccable. It was also very noticeable that he was the signatory witness to most of the "his and her crosses" on lots of other documents. This puzzled me for some time, where would an ag lab. get the necessary education at that time to be able to write like that. It was then I discovered the Wilshire (and various other spellings of) link to the Joseph Lancaster schools, John having married Alice Willshiere. Of course my hopes of finding an answer to this were soon dashed when I realised that the Wilshire/Lancaster connection took place virtually 100 years after John and Alice's marriage"
