Notes about JOHN BENNETT

John's occupation was that of farmer, beer seller according to the Seal parish register entry for the baptism of his daughter Caroline in 1845, and is referred to as a shopkeeper in relation to his appointment as parish constable, of Broad Oak (a cottage on the SW edge of Underriver parish, later occupied by George Ranger, brother of Rebecca, John's daughter in law) and his wife Elizabeth. The White Rock is first mentioned as a beer-house in 1861.

1841 aged 40, living at Underriver with his wife Elizabeth 40 and children George 15, William 10, James 7, Jesse 3, Ann 15, Mary 11, Ellen 5 and Maria 1.

1851 aged 50, living at Great Underriver with his wife Elizabeth 50, and children James 17, Jesse 13 (entered as John), Mary 11, Caroline 5, daughter in law Rebecca 25 (wife of George Bennett who was not present in this census) and granddaughters Mary Ann 4 and Jane 10 months
