  • Notes about Rachel WRIOTHESLEY

Daughter of Thomas Wriothesley, 4th Earl of Southampton, and Rachel de Massue. Paternal granddaughter of Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton, and Elizabeth Vernon. Maternal granddaughter of Daniel de Massue, Seigneur de Ruvigny, and Madeleine de Pinot des Fontaines.

Her elder sister Elizabeth was the Viscountess Campden, while her younger half-sister, also named Elizabeth, was the Countess of Northumberland.

Rachel was first married to Francis Vaughan, Lord Vaughan, circa 1653. Their only child died in infancy in 1655, and Lord Vaughan died in 1667.

She then married William Russell, Lord Russell, in 1669. He was the son and heir of the Earl of Bedford, and together they had two daughters and a son - Rachel, Catherine and Wriothesley Russell.

Rachel became Lady Russell in 1678, when her brother-in-law died unmarried and her husband became heir to the earldom of Bedford.

William was implicated in the Rye House Plot in 1683 and imprisoned in the Tower of London. He was tried and convicted of treason and sentenced to death. The execution was carried out at Lincoln's Inn Fields on 21 July 1683.

Rachel never remarried and survived her husband by 40 years. She lies buried in the Bedford Chapel of the parish Church of St. Michael, Chenies.

Her son Wriothesley Russell became the 2nd Duke of Bedford on the death of her father-in-law in 1700. Both of her daughters became duchesses - Rachel was the Duchess of Devonshire, and Catherine was the Duchess of Rutland.
