Henry Bovis, who, at the age of 93, recently crossed the Great Divide at Carterton, was at one time a sergeant of police in the London force, and had very exciting experiences in the days preceding the repeal of the Corn Laws. Deceased was also actively engaged m the famous Chartist riots. Curious to relate, Carterton has numbered among its residents two very old men concerned in the latter. Recently deceased William Parker was a Chartist, while the duty of the late Sergeant Bovis was to suppress Chartists. The deceased officer was also, on duty at the lying-in-state of the great Duke of Wellington. In his long, life he has witnessed many remarkable historical events, and seen the marvellous progress of science in all manner of directions. Railways, steamboats, cables, telegraphs,, telephones, wireless telegraphs, airships, and many other aids to the advancement of the human race have all been developed during his span of life. Deceased was twice married, Mrs H. W. Mansfield, of Carterton, being his only surviving daughter. There are 40 grand-children and great-grand-children.
