"John Chambers' daughter Lydia married Mathew Adams. John Adams, reputedly of English origin, (CEQ:229) was probably born very near 1700 and was at Peapack, New Jersey by 1743. It is possible that his father was the emigrant, as reference is made in Andrew Johnson's journal to "Old Adamses house." (SCHQ 1:194; 2:36,38,121) His will 28 December 1752- 24 December 1753, gives residence as Bedminster, Somerset County, New Jersey and names wife Elizabeth and 5 children. (NJW: 161 R) The widow was living as late as 1767. (NJA 33:267)

Matthew Adams, son of John b 172- or 173- was mentioned in the will of Ephraim McDowell of Bedminster as a debtor. (NJA 33:267) His own will, Hunterdon County, 11 September 1767- 16 March 1768 names wife Lydia, daughter of John Chambers, deceased, six children and his mother (NJA 33:9).

John Adams born about 1715; lived in Tewksbury Township, Hunterdon County; died May 12, 1783 in his 68th year; an elder in the Lamington Presbyterian Church which is in Bedminster Township and across the river from Tewksbury. (SCHQ 2:311) married Agnes--- who with four children and several grand children are named in his will, 15 February 1783 - 27 May 1783 (NJW: 1190) The residence of this family and the similarity of given names suggest a possible relationship to the preceding John Adams of Bedminster Township. Also, he may have been an older brother of Samuel Adams (see hereinafter) a native of Pennsylvania.
