Notes about James Minty

James was a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He had been trained in the profession in Scotland. He had been engaged in farming and in veterinary practice prior to coming to the United States in 1872.

James & Margaret settled in Yamhill County were he continued his veterinary practice and farming. For many years he was Stock Inspector for the County, during which time in conjunction with Dr. James Withycombe, he worked for extermination of contagious diseases of cattle. He has been largely responsible for bringing county stock up to a high standard. No stock show was complete without this rugged old Scotsman, whose rich brogue and the clack of his cane were characteristic of the affair as he came and went, followed by his faithful little dog. Owing to his closely shaven upper lip, which distinguished to a marked degree his appearance to Paul Kruger, he was often spoken of as "Oom Paul" the second.
