Mary was underage when her father died. She selected Col. John Bolling as her guardian. A subsequent suit was brought and Francis Mallory, her uncle, was chosen to be her guardian.

Col John Bolling (1700-1757) was the first guardian of Mary Reade and was related by marriage. His first wife, Elizabeth Lewis, was a granddaughter of Mildred Reade, sister of Francis Reade and daughter of Colonel George Reade of York.
