Kort na hun huwelijk op 10 januari 1926 vetrokken Bart en Mia naar Curaçao waar Ben werd geboren. Na dat Bart hier zijn fatale ziekte had opgelopen, vertrokken zij op 23 juni 1928 weer terug naar Nederland, en vestigden zij zich in Nieuwenhagen. Na enige tijd werd Bart alsnog opgenomen in het TBC sanatorium in Nijmegen. Na langere tijd kuren is hij overleden.

Bartele van der Veen was als lid van de militaire politie gestationeerd in Kerkrade rond 1924. Er stonden 2 houten barakken in de omgeving van de huidige brandweer kazerne dus voor de "bril" tunnel.
Hij was wachtmeester en droeg twee grijze koorden op de borst. Een sergeant droeg witte koorden.
Dienstplichtige v/d lichting 18 september 1919 uit gemeente Schoten. Op 28-novenber 1924 ingeschreven als sergant vrijwilliger bij de Politietroepen te Maastricht door ene Alofs. 10e regiment infanterie. Op 6 nov. 1925 gedririgeerd naar Koloniale Reserve te Curaçau. 31 maart 1931 onslagen uit militaire dienst wegens "lichaamsgebreken"
