De latere Kardinaal Willebrands was het oudste kind uit een gezin met 9 kinderen.
Hij werd tot priester gewijd op 26 mei 1934 en hij heeft van 1937 tot na 25 juni 1940 als kapelaan geassisteerd bij Deken van Noort op het Begijnhof.
Van zijn periode als kapelaan op het Begijnhof zijn al zijn preken nog bewaard, Op 28 oktober 1937 werd Dr. J. Willebrands door Bisschop Huibers benoemd tot Directeur van het "Gilde der Klare Waarheid" Op 6 november 1940 werd hij tot hoogleraar in de wijsbegeerte te Warmond benoemd.
Op 28 april 1969 werd hij Kardinaal.
Van 2 tot 5 september 2009 heeft in Utrecht een internationaal congres plaatsgevonden t.g.v. de 100e geboortedag van Kardinaal Willebrands.
