Jaap Suidgeest werd geboren op 20 juni 1930 in Vijfhuizen. Hij werd tot priester gewijd op 15 juni 1957, net zoals een van zijn drie broers. Zijn enige zuster werd non. In 1961 werd hij pastoor in Amsterdam West en sinds 1978 was hij directeur van de RK Citykerk, een benaming die hij direct veranderde in Pastoraal coordinator van de binnenstad. Op 3 mei 1984 werd hij Deken van Amsterdam.
In 1995 nam de heer Suidgeest afscheid als deken van Amsterdam, maar hij bleef nog tot 1 september 1997 als rector verbonden aan de Begijnhofkapel. Op 15 juni 1997 vierde Jaap Suidgeest met een feestelijke eucharistieviering gevolgd door een grootse receptie op het Begijnhof zijn 40-jarig priesterfeest. Zijn afbeelding op schilderij hangt in de Regentenkamer der pastorie en werd geschilderd door mevrouw Gert Bogels. De onthulling vond plaats op 29 november 1995.
Hij werd opgevolgd door v Burgsteden.
