Hij was Hofschilder, decoratieschilder van voorwerpen en interieurs. Hij werkte ook mee aan de Decoratie van de Gouden Koets en ook was hij Kerkschilder. Tijdens de viering van 550 jaar Mirakel in 1895 had hij opdracht gekregen de Begijnhofkapel danig te versieren en zeer waarschijnlijk heeft hij de opdracht voor de 8 schilderijen die in die dagen aan de balustrade hingen en nu nog bewaard worden op de Koorzolder in het Begijnhof verstrekt aan Leo Arendszen. Het is ook zeer wel mogelijk dat deze opdracht voor Leo Arendszen rechtstreeks van Rector Klönne afkomstig was, omdat in de periode 1895 - 1899 Leo Arendzen diverse schilderstukken voor de Kapel volbracht.

In 1905 kreeg Trautwein opdracht tot het schilderen van een afbeelding van Koningin Wilhelmina en heden hangt het nog steeds in het Stadhuis van Winschoten en het is betaald door de toenmalige wethouder H.I. Schonfeld.
