Lourens was a farmer near the towns of Genderen and Eethen.
Following the American Civil War, many railroads were built into the midwest, opening up vast new farmlands. The resulting increase in the supply of grain caused a drop in the agricultural prices worldwide, and by 1878 a depression reached The Netherlands. Many farmers were no longer able to earn a living on the farms, and the cities and towns did not have enough jobs available to absorb the influx of laborers. Some moved to Harlaamermeer and other newly drained lands in Holland, but as the years went by, emigration to the United States, Canada, and South Africa increased.
Lourens emigrated with his wife and 5 children to the United States of America, embarking from Rotterdam on the steamship Spaarndam at the end of July and landing in New York on August 10, 1892. He continued on to Pella Iowa, where he settled, renting a farm just east of the town.
On the same ship was his sister, Clasina, her husband Willem Vos, and their children, also destined for the Pella area.[Aert.FTW]
