Notes about Jan Mastbergen

In 1892 John came with his family to America and settled near Middleburg, Iowa where he was engaged in farming. They also farmed near Sheldon, Hospers, Ashton and Primghar.
In 1921 John retired and lived at Primghar. He had been blind the past 19 years of his life and passed away at the home of his daughter, Dora Grebow due to infirmities of old age (paper 6 aug 1945).

Hospers, Iowa was named after Henry Hospers, one of the founders of Orange City, Iowa. Henry was one of the original settlers of Pella, Iowa (he was age 17 when he came to America in 1847). His father Jan Hospers was a school teacher in Hoogblokland and emigrated to the States in 1849. He kept up for many years a correspondation with Eimert Aanen, mayor of Hoornaar, Land van Altena, Holland (Z. Aanen, 1997)

A group of people from the Netherlands founded Pella in south central Iowa near Des Moines and was founded in 1847 when the first group (including Henry Hospers) came. About 12 families left Pella and founded Orange City Iowa in 1870, after the price of land around Pella got too high for new immigrants to afford. (Douglas Rozendal, 2012)

All of Mastbergen were around Sheldon Iowa. They arrived in the US in 1893 and arrived at Middleberg Ia. I have seen other families that started at Middleberg so I suspect someone took them in and helped them get a start in the US. Middleberg is hardly a town. It is more like a wide spot in the road. Some went to Brooten Minnesota and one family has been in Michigan a long time.
