Dordtse stadsdichter, oud-militair en schrijver Wim Jilleba op 93-jarige leeftijd overleden
De Dordtse dichter Wim Jilleba is overleden. ,,Op 30 augustus 2021 overleed op de respectabele leeftijd van 93 jaar, maar voor ons te vroeg, Willem Jilleba’’, meldt de familie van de Dordtenaar. Jilleba was naast oud-militair ook schrijver en stadsdichter en daardoor een bekend gezicht voor veel Dordtenaren.

De Nederlandse Poëzie Encyclopedie omschrijft Jilleba in zijn jonge jaren als volgt: ,,Als telg uit een straatarm gezin was het Wim Jilleba niet gegeven door te mogen leren. Het enig haalbare was de ambachtsschool en dat alleen dankzij een buurvrouw. Later deed hij via avondscholen alsnog de kennis op die hij dacht nodig te hebben om niet net zo arm te blijven als zijn ouders.’’

In 1948 kwam hij als dienstplichtige in militaire dienst, waarna hij na onder andere sergeant geweest te zijn in 1985 pensioneerde en waarna hij zich meer ging richten op het dichten en schrijven. In 2007 verscheen zijn boek Buitenlander in vijandig land, waarin Jilleba vertelt over zijn ervaringen tijdens de laatste maanden van de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

Altijd blijven dichten
Jilleba schreef, zoals hij in 2017 zelf zei, ‘voor iedereen leesbare poëzie’. Thema’s als liefde en dood kwamen vaak terug, maar in zijn gedicht Ariëlle kwamen onderwerpen als discriminatie en racisme ook aan bod, omdat hij die zaken verafschuwde.

De Dordtenaar bracht meerdere dichtbundels uit, zoals In alles ben je zelf, waarvan hij in 2017 plechtig beloofde dat het zijn laatste zou zijn: ,,In mei word ik 90 jaar en ik merk dat mijn grijze massa een beetje taai begint te worden. Dat wil overigens niet zeggen dat ik mijn laatste gedicht heb geschreven.”

Dat bleek inderdaad: in 2019 werd hij tweede in een dichtwedstrijd die ten tijde van The Passion met de titel #jebentnietallleen van start ging. Vanwege een longontsteking was de stadsdichter bij die prijsuitreiking niet aanwezig.
