Diet Barendregt wordt op 9 mei 1924 aan de De la Reijstraat in Dordrecht geboren. Ze zit op het Dordtse gymnasium wanneer de oorlog uitbreekt en raakt op haar zestiende betrokken bij het verzet. Op verzoek van huisarts dr Oscar Cahen treedt ze in 1941 op als zangeres bij concerten bij joodse Dordrechters. Helpt later met zoeken van onderduikadressen voor joodse families, verspreidt illegale kranten en pamfletten en staat onderduikers bij.

Jan Kloos

In 1944 leert de Dordtse Jan Kloos kennen. Hij is actief in een knok- en spionageploeg in Dordrecht. De twee worden hopeloos verliefd en trouwen op 22 november 1944. Maar hun geluk is van korte duur. Hun huwelijk duurt slechts 2 maanden. In de nacht van 8 op 9 december 1944 worden ze gearresteerd door de Sicherheitsdienst. Ze worden opgesloten in de Dordtse gevangenis en de volgende dag overgebracht naar de gevangenis aan het Wolvenplein in Utrecht. Ze worden verhoord en Jan Kloos wordt in aanwezigheid van zijn vrouw gemarteld. Op 16 januari wordt hij overgebracht naar de Weteringschansgevangenis in Amsterdam en op 30 januari 1945 door de nazi’s gefusilleerd aan de Amsteldijk. Hij laat zijn vrouw een afscheidsbrief na, waarin hij haar zijn liefde betuigt en haar aanspoort alles uit het leven te halen.

Diet wordt na een gevangenschap van zeven weken vrijgelaten uit de Utrechtse gevangenis. In de laatste oorlogsmaanden neemt ze opnieuw deel aan ondergrondse activiteiten. Ze leeft ondergedoken en overleeft ernstig ondervoed de oorlog.

Diet is al vanaf 1941 bij het verzet betrokken. Begin december 1944 wordt Jans Dordtse vriend en verzetsman Leendert Reidsma door verraad gearresteerd. Volgens sommige bronnen worden Jan en Diet in zijn zakboekje genoemd. Dat wordt hen noodlottig. Twee weken na hun huwelijk worden Diet en Jan in de nacht van 8 op 9 december 1944 door de politie van hun bed gelicht. Ze worden ingesloten in het huis van bewaring aan de Doelstraat en twee dagen later overgebracht naar de strafgevangenis aan het Wolvenplein in Utrecht.

Vanaf 14 december worden beiden langdurig door de Sicherheitsdienst verhoord. Diet is getuige van ernstige martelingen die Jan ondergaat. Hij laat echter niets los. Op 15 december 1944 wordt het doodvonnis wegens spionage tegen Jan Kloos uitgesproken. Diet wordt eind januari vrijgelaten en pakt haar illegale werk weer op, onder meer als hoofdkoerierster van de sectie Jacob van de Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten in Dordrecht. Op 30 januari 1945 worden Jan Kloos en Leendert Reidsma in Amsterdam gefusilleerd. Diet overleeft de oorlog en overlijdt in 2015.
