Dorcas (Clark) Oslage was my great-great-great grandmother. She married Heinrich Rudolph "Jacob" Oslage on December 17, 1848 in Dearborn County, IN.
Census records indicate she was born in either Germany or New York. I'm uncertain as to which one it could be, as I've only been able to locate her in 1850 & 1860.
Dorcas was the mother of three sons. George, the eldest, pulled a disappearing act after 1880 in Helena, Arkansas. Francis, the middle son, was killed by a train in 1875 just a month before his 21st birthday. Her youngest son, Rudolph Frederick, was my great-great grandfather.
In the last five years that I have been researching my family history, I've gone from absolutely no information to making connections to nearly every Oslage that ever stepped foot on US soil. It took me two and a half years to finally learn that Grandma Dorcas passed away just months after her husband, Jacob. Her passing gave explanations as to why the boys were split & how come my own family ended up in Dubois County when Jacob's brother took over guardianship of Frederick.
The only thing that still eludes me is a burial place for Grandma Dorcas. According to Grandpa Jacob's pension file, she died & was buried in Dearborn County, Indiana. Unfortunately, the file did not indicate where. Perhaps it will be another two years before I solve this mystery, but I wanted to finally create a memorial for Grandma so that I can pay my respects, air my frustration, and beg her to leave some sort of a bread crumb. I understand that perhaps she was buried in an unmarked grave. Or maybe it was marked, but something happened to the stone. Either way, Grandma deserves the same amount of respect that I would give to Grandpa on his memorial. It's past time I gave her that respect.
Rest in peace, Grandma, for you are the biggest mystery of them all.
