"MAJOR LEMUEL CORBIN, (Philip, James, Clement), b. Feb. 19, 1740; m. Rebecca Davis of Oxford, Dec 8, 1763, at Dudley; she was the dau. of Samuel and Mary Davis, and was b. at Oxford Jan 10, 1736, and d. at Dudley April 3, 1820. Lemuel CORBIN served actively in the Revolution, being in the Lexington Alarm for ten days, sergeant in Capt. Nathaniel Healy Company, Col. Holman's Regiment, in the alarm to Rhode Island, Dec, 1776, for twenty-one days; was commissioned lieutenant of Capt. Elias Pratt's Company, Col. Holman's Regiment (5th Worcester), Sep 25, 1778; served also at several other times. (See "Massachusetts Soldiers, Sailors and Marines in the Civil War; MASSCW). Here the service of Lemuel CORBIN and that of Samuel CORBIN, both of Dudley, is given together. As they were both captains and their names were so similar, they were doubtless taken to be one and the same person. A letter from the adjutant-general shows. However, that most of this service belongs to Lemuel.) He became major of the militia after the Revolution, and was captain of the company from Dudley which marched to help suppress Shay's Rebellion. He was a prominent citizen of Dudley, where he held the following offices: Hog-Rev., 1766; cast end constable, 1768; warden, 1770, 1781; highway surveyor, 1772, 1773, 1775, 1783, 1785; tything man, 1772; collector, 1775 revolutionary committee of correspondence, 1775, 1778, 1779, 1783, 1785; school committee, 1777, 1782, 1784; selectman, 1787. He was appointed a guardian under the state of the Nipmug Indians. He d. May 7, 1825."
