Marion Biesbrock, employed on the Will Gregg farm, a mile northeast of Hawarden, took his own life about 9:30 Saturday morning by hanging himself in the barn. He had been working about the farm during the morning and shortly before 9:30 drove into the barn yard and tied his team and went to the tenant house, which he occupied with his family, where he ate a light lunch. Apparently he went from the house directly to the barn where he climb upon a partition between two stalls and fastened a rope over a rafter with a loop about his neck and jumped off. About 10 o’clock Mr. Gregg noticed the team tied in the barn yard and went into the barn where he was horrified when he discovered the body dangling from the rope with the feet only about 18 inches off the floor of the barn. As he had not missed Marion but a short time Mr. Gregg felt that life might not yet be extinct and he hastily cut down the body and started diligently at work at artificial respiration, getting word to Mrs. Gregg to summon a physician and also to notify Marion’s brother, Andrew Biesbrock, who is employed on the Ralph Gregg farm, a mile further east. Mr. Gregg was still working over the body when Dr. F.F. Null arrived but a hasty examination revealed that his efforts were useless and that death had occurred fully a half hour earlier. Mrs. Biesbrock was still at work in the garden when Dr. Null arrived, unaware of the tragedy which had been enacted, and she was then advised of the sad occurrence. Coroner A.C. Jongewaard of Sioux Center was notified and came at once to the Gregg farm but after an investigation concluded that an inquest was unnecessary as no doubt existed as to the manner of his death. Mr. Biesbrock was of a despondent nature and is known to have brooded considerably of late. He was a steady and dependable farm hand and no other cause can be ascribed to his act other than melancholia. His eldest brother, Bert Biesbrock committed suicide by hanging himself in his room in Chicago about four years ago. Funeral services were held at the Christian Reformed Church in this city at 2:30 Monday afternoon with the pastor, Rev. Andrew Folkema, officiating. Interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery. Marion Biesbrock was the seventh son of Mr. and Mrs. John Biesbrock of Hawarden. He was born in this city January 3, 1913, and all his life has been spent on farms in this community. On. November 9, 1931, he was united in marriage with Miss Helen Hodgson at Jackson, Minnesota. One daughter, Mabel, now 4 years old, was born to them. Besides his wife and daughter he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Biesbrock, and six brothers, Neal of Chicago, and Nick, Joe, Andrew, William and Jake of Hawarden, and one sister, Miss Helen Biesbrock of Chicago.
