Nico Eigenhuis stelt iun https://suriname.nu/surinamezoeken/knowledge-base/beeldsnijder-matroos/:"Majorin Elisabeth Bijval (1774-1843) zou trouwen met de EBG-er Buschman, die in 1779 eigenaar werd van plantage Singularite. Na diens overlijden vertrok ze -inmiddels tevens eigenaresse van katoenplantage Bremen aan de Warrappakreek- in 1817 naar Nederland met hun huisbediende Johannes Charles. In 1833 werd de plantage Bremen door de oceaan geheel weggespoeld en hierna zou zou de familie Buschman in 1841 la Singularité van de hand doen aan Jan Frederik Taunay, destijds de grootste administrateur van Suriname. Majorin Elisabeth Bijval overleed in Londen."
Noot: Vooralsnog bleek uit geen bron dat John Buschman eigenaar van La Singularité werd in 1779. Ik heb daarom een vraagteken geplaatst bij dit eigendom.
Het is echter mogelijk dat Buschman een band had met het de Hernhutter Broedergemeente die rond 1793 opging in het Zendeling Genootschap Zeist. Zo wordt gemeld in Berigten uit de Heiden-wereld, Volume 2 [6e jaargang]:
van het Zendeling-Genootschap (Zeist) in 1840: p.121
"Dat er voor eenige jaren van de plantaadje la Singularité van den Hr.Buschman, tien Negers naar Berbice gedeserteerd zijn, is daadzaak, en de vijanden van het rijk Gods zijn niet in gebreke gebleven, de schuld hiervan aan het Christelijk onderwijs toe te schrijven, hoewel er slechts één gedoopte onder was."
Mogelijk wordt in bovenstaand relaas verwezen naar "het wegloopen van twaalf Negers, in 1838, van de plantaadje la Singularité in de beneden Comwijne; eene plantaadje, waar de neegers het zeer goed hebben, en waar gezet des Zondags gepredikt wordt. Heeft nu de eigenaar of administrateur alles gedaan, wat mogelijk, om het lot der slaven te verbeteren, dan kan de dag komen, waarop de emancipatie, ook in onze koloniën, kan plaats vinden; [...]." Note: As yet no source indicated that John Buschman became the owner of La Singularité in 1779. I have therefore placed a question mark on this ownership.
However, it is possible that Buschman had a connection with the Hernhutter Broedergemeente, which around 1793 became part of the Zendeling Genootschap Zeist. Thus it is reported in Berigten uit de Heiden-wereld , Volume 2 [6th year] of the Zendeling-Genootschap (Zeist) in 1840: p. 121
"That ten Negroes deserted to Berbice for some years from the plantation la Singularité of Mr. Buschman, is a matter of fact, and the enemies of the kingdom of God have not failed, due to the fault of Christian teaching. although there was only one baptized among them. "
Possibly in the above account reference is made to "the running away of twelve Negroes, in 1838, from the plantation la Singularité in the lower Comwijne, a plantation, where the negroes are very well off, and where preaching is done on Sunday. Now has the owner or administrator has done everything possible to improve the fate of the slaves, so the day may come when emancipation can take place, also in our colonies; [...]. The Buschman Connections
From a census record we know that Laurentia is sister to Amelia Buschman, but the other relationships to the Buschmans shown here are yet to be confirmed. However it does seem likely that Laurentia is sister to Caroline Buschman (daughter of John Buschman, esq. of Surinam), which then suggests the other family members.
Some coincidences?
Charles Stewart Drewry and Richard Hardinge Stewart, who are almost certainly cousins (see The Stewart/Runciman Connection) both marry Buschmans:
Charles married Laurentia Buschman; Richard married Caroline Buschman.
(Both marriages are in St Pancras)
Richard's marriage to Caroline is witnessed by T J Buschman and Maria E Buschman.
Richard and Caroline named two daughters Laurentia and Amelia. It seems likely they are named for the two sisters Laurentia and Amelia Buschman. The third daughter is named Caroline.
In 1832, Richard and Caroline give a son the name Henry Tillotson.
In 1837, Charles and Laurentia name their first born son William Tillotson. (This must have been in memory of Charles' brother, William Tillotson who died in 1835.)
Theodore John Buschman married Jane Runciman in 1823.
Two of the witnesses were Maria Buschman and Amelia Buschman.
(Charles Stewart Drewry and Richard Hardinge Stewart are probably cousins via connections to the Runciman Family.)
