Funeral services for Fred Bates were held Friday afternoon from the Congregational church with Pastor Tom Christianson having charge. Music was provided by mrs. Donald Noble and Beverly Frohwein with Mrs. Clarence Frohwein as organist.
Pallbearers were Frank Hromatko, Jr., Ernest Wellhausen, Clark Weatherwax, Ellis Stevens, Wm. Haemker and Carl Gildemeister. Mrs. Frank Hromatko Jr. and Mrs Herman Kruger had charge of the flowers.
Fred Bates was born near Coal Creek October 3, 1885 to Chalkly and Elizabeth (Blanchard) Bates. He was one of six children. His parents, a brother and two sisters have preceded him in death. He passed away very suddenly on Monday afternoon at 4:55 of a heart attack while fishing at the county gravel pit south of Ocheyedan.
He spent his youth with his parents, living in Missouri and southeastern Iowa. While in his late teens he started work with the Rock Island Railway and served them for 17 years.
December 18, 1912, he married Minnie Akkerman at Sibley and to this union were born five children. In 1919 he left the railroad and took up farming. He continued in that work until 1952.
He leaves to mourn: his wife, Minnie; their five children, Mrs. Helen Hamilton of Primghar, Mrs. George Frick (Dorothy), Mervin John, and Mrs. Donald Dirks (Myrtle) of Ocheyedan, and Eugene Edward of Milford. By a previous marriage two children survive, Mrs. Myrtle Marvin of Colorado and Mrs. Eva Ryan of California, also survive plus twenty one grandchildren and one great-grandchild and a host of other relatives and friends.
