Jakob "Jake" Telkamp and Mary Bloom were married on Feb. 14,1906, at Ellsworth, Iowa. After living five years on a farm near Blairsburg, Iowa, they decided to move north to Kossuth County. They bought a farm near Germania, now Lakota, just two miles north on Highway 169, now owned by Glen Mabus. In July of 1912 their home and most of their belongings were destroyed by fire; they lived in the garage while their home was rebuilt.
On September 22, 1916, they became parents of twin daughters, Adah and Idah.
When the girls became school age, they were sent by bus to Ledyard School, as their farm was on the line of the school district.
Jake and Mary joined the Presbyterian Church. Jake served as elder and on the board of trustees; Mary was active in the Ladies Aid and Missionary Society. Jake was on the R.E.A. Board and worked many hours and attended many meetings to get electricity into northern Kossuth County.
In connection with the general farming, they also raised Purebred milking Shorthorn cattle.
During the Depression of the forties, they lost their farm north of Lakota. They bought 120 acres east of Lakota. They lived there until 1950 when they bought a home in town. Jakes health had started to fail and he passed away in the spring of 1955. Mary continued to live in Lakota and enjoyed making crafts and visiting friends until the fall of 1973 when she suffered a stroke. She could not live by herself any longer and entered the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center, She spent the last few months of her life there and passed away in October of 1974.
Their two daughters;
Ada (Mrs. Alvin Rippentrop) now lives in Titonka, Iowa.
Idah (Mrs F.L. Bakken), now lives in Bode, Iowa.
