Maurice E. Hayenga was the son of Rev. L.H. and Amelia Blocklinger Hayenga. The family came to the George area when Rev. Hayenga served the Zoar Presbyterian Church. Maurice attended rural

school, the George High School and furthered his education at the Capitol City Commercial College in Des Moines, Iowa. In September 1917, he joined the army and served in the United States and France in World War I. He then returned toGeorge where he worked at Martin Brother's Store.
He married Tillie Klinkenborg, daughter of Evert and Julia Christians Klinkenborg. Tillie spent a few years on the family farm and then the family moved into town. Tillie graduated from George School and enrolled at Iowa State TeachersCollege in Cedar Falls. She attended college for three years and taught for a number of years in both the rural schools and the local town school. ..."

He married Tillie Klinkenborg, daughter of Evert and Julia Christians Klinkenborg. Tillie spent a few years on the family farm and then the family moved into town. She attended college for three years and taught for a number of years in both the rural schools and the local town school.
Maurice and Tille started Hayenga Mercantile Store on Mail Street. Both attended the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church where they served in a number of offices. Maurice was a charter member and helped organize the Jack Sauter Post 404 of theAmerican Legion, served on the Soldier's Relief Board, was Superintendent of the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery, belonged to the George Chamber of Commerce and was a fireman for many years.
Tillie, too was very active in the community, being the first "Avon Lady" in George, a leader in the girl Scouts, a faithful member of the Jack Sauter American Legion Auxiliary and participated in many activities in her church.
The couple raised one daughter, Marlene (m. Robert Kannegieter), who lives in George."
