Wardell E. Hinderks 1918-2011
OLATHE, Kan. Wardell E. Hinderks, 92, passed away April 5, 2011 at the Santa Marta retirement community in Olathe, Kan., surrounded by his family.
He was born June 8, 1918 at Stewartsville, Mo., to Elias and Laura (Daries) Hinderks and spent his early life in this community. After two years at Graceland University, Lamoni, Iowa, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941, advanced tothe rank of Lt. Colonel and piloted a B-29 in the Pacific war operation. After the war, he finished his college education at Purdue University. He then returned to Kansas City and founded Flury-Hinderks Insurance Agency.
During his life, Wardell served as a lay minister in the Community of Christ church, served on the board of the YMCA and worked tirelessly in numerous community and church activities.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty Lou (Zinser); their three children: Larry Hinderks and wife, Stacy; Penny Bozarth and husband, Philip; and Scott Hinderks and wife, Susan; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Preston Hinderks and Norman Hinderks.
Wardell will always be remembered by his cheerful and positive words, his closeness with his Lord, and his love of family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Santa Marta Memory Care Garden, 13800 W. 116th Street, Olathe, KS 66062.
