They decided to immigrate to America and left Germany on March 11, 1902. They boarded the ship Kaiser Wilhelm The Grosser in Bremerhaven, Germany and sailed to America arriving in New York (no doubt Ellis Island) on March 19, 1902. They traveled by train, going directly to Kossuth County, Iowa, rather than going to Butler or Grundy County, Iowa, where most of the German immigrants went. they arrived in Titonka on March 22, 1902.
They settled in a house located in a pasture about one half mile south of German Valley in the southwest quarter of Section 28, German Township. They moved there in November of 1902. They also joined the Ramsey Reformed Church in 1902.In June of 1903 their only child, Elska, passed away. ...
In January of 1917 they moved to the farm they had purchased in the southeast quarter of Section 24, Ramsey Township.

«/b»Services Held Tuesday For Gretje Smidt, 82
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 20 at 1:30 p.m. at the Ramsey Reformed Church for Mrs Warner Smidt, Sr. Rev. John Janssen conducted the service, with Mrs Donald Tapper at the organ, and Mr and Mrs Walter Aukes, singers. Interment was in the church cemetery. Casket attendants were her grandchildren, John Smidt, William Smidt, David Smidt, Frank Folkerts, Warden Smidt and Ronald Folkerts. The Blake Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs Warner Smidt, Sr., born Gretje J. Janshen, was born August 22, 1879 at Groothusen, Ostfriesland, Germany. She was a daughter of Mr and Mrs Sieman Janshen, (nee Elska Hennings). She was married on September 29, 1900 to Warner Smidt, Sr. at Groothusen. She came to America in March 1902. They spent their life after coming to America in the Titonka community. They farmed from 1903 to 1942 when they retired to Titonka.
To this union nine children were born. She was a communicant member of the Ramsey Reformed Church since November, 1902.
She had been in fairly good health until about six weeks ago when she began to fail due to heart trouble. She had been hospitalized for 12 days at Mason City. She passed away at her home in Titonka on February 16, 1962, at 11:55 p.m. Her death was attributed to a coronary thrombosis. She attained the age of 82 years, 5 months and 24 days.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Elska in infancy, and Elsie, Mrs Ehno Folkerts; one brother, Esdert. She leaves to mourn her passing: her husband Warner Smidt, Sr.; eight children Meindert of Woden, Sieman of Titonka, Enko of Titonka, Jennie, Mrs Fred Gray of Titonka, Rev Esdert Smidt, Dumont; John of Titonka; Warner of Titonka; Grace, Mrs Floyd Huisman of Titonka; one foster daughter, Elsa Mrs John Janssen of Huron, So. Dak.; one brother, John Johnson of Lakota; 34 grandchildren. Besides these there are many other relatives and friends."
