They decided to immigrate to America and left Germany on March 11, 1902. They boarded the ship Kaiser Wilhelm The Grosser in Bremerhaven, Germany and sailed to America arriving in New York (no doubt Ellis Island) on March 19, 1902. Theytraveled by train, going directly to Kossuth County, Iowa, rather than going to Butler or Grundy County, Iowa, where most of the German immigrants went. they arrived in Titonka on March 22, 1902.
They settled in a house located in a pasture about one half mile south of German Valley in the southwest quarter of Section 28, German Township. They moved there in November of 1902. They also joined the Ramsey Reformed Church in 1902.In June of 1903 their only child, Elska, passed away. ...
In January of 1917 they moved to the farm they had purchased in the southeast quarter of Section 24, Ramsey Township.
The Smidts had nine children after coming to America. They were: Meindert, Elsie, Siemen, Enko, Jennie, Esdert, John, Warner and Grace. ... Elsie married Ehno Folkerts, ... Jennie married Fred Gray, ... and Grace married Floyd Huisman....

Services Held Wednesday For Long Time Resident
Funeral services for a long-time Titonka area resident, Warner M. Smidt, 96, were held Wednesday, July 9 at 1:30 p.m. at the Ramsey Reformed Church with Rev. John Janssen officiating. Mrs. Richard Beenken was orgnist, and accompanied a duet of Mrs. Vern Rafdal and Mrs. Alfred Baade. The Blake Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Smidt passed away Sunday, July 6 at the Westview Nursing Home in Britt.
Serving as casket attendants were Warren Smidt, Kenneth Huisman, Gary Smidt, Corwin Smidt, Warner Kieth Smidt and Terry Schutjer. Interment was in the Ramsey Reformed Church Cemetery.
Warner M. Smidt was born February 20, 1873 in Germany. On September 29, 1900, he was married to Gretje Janshen at Groothusen, Germany. She preceded him in death in 1962. the United States in 1902 and the United States in 1962 and settled near Titonka the same year. They retired to Titonka in 1942.
Survivors include six sons, Meindert Smidt of Woden, Enko Smidt, Warner Smidt, Jr., Sieman Smidt and John Smidt, all of Titonka, and Rev Esdert Smidt of Sibley; two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Jennie) Gray, and Mrs. Floyd (Grace) Huisman, both of Titonka; and one foster daughter, Mrs. John (Elsa) Janssen of Huron, S. D. Also surviving are 34 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and two sisters living in Germany.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two daughters, two brothers and three sisters.
