Daniel Jr. first appears in the land records of Duplin Co. in 1771 aswitness to one of his father`s sales. Much confusion has arisen becauseof the Unhealed transition from the one Daniel to the other, which Ifeel can be placed in 1778 (see John above). In the 1790 census he had 3 sons under 16, and in 1800he had added one son under 10 for a final total of four children only.
We know from the Florida 1850 census that his second son Aaron was born in1785. It must be therefore that his witnessing in 1771 was done at age 16 rather than majority, and that he was born about 1755. Perhaps he was chosen as a witness by his father to establish his existence against thetime when the similar naming would make legal questions. I feel that there is an indication here of a sense of pending mortality on the part of Daniel Sr. With no further transactions under this name in Sampson Co.for 12 years when they had been annual occurrences till then, and then no further effort to distinguish the names at a time when we can be sure it is Daniel II who is in question, I feel certain that we have corroboration of the 1788 death date of the father who does not appear in the census of 1790 despite the major land operations being conducted by Daniel. In 1782 Daniel received a grant, and in 1784 acquired additiona lland near Whiteville (in 1774 Daniel Sr sold land in the area). A set of four person land deals, in1826, exchanging land previously owned by this second Daniel, tells us for certain the names of his four sons, and sets his decease at near 1825. They were 1: Reuben (b. 1783), 2: Aaron (b.1785),
3: Luke (b.1788), and 4: Thomas (b. ca. 1793. This deal enables us to be quite sure of the assignments of children to the other Columbus Co.brothers. Daniel`s wife was probably a Spivey, sister of Nathaniel and daughter of Edmond Spivey. Her given name may have been Beverly. A Bev Fowler (listed as B. in the Williamson index, but actually Bev and clearly not Ben) witnessed a deed in Seven Creeks in 1815. There is no reasonable assignment except as Daniel`s wife.
There is a family tradition of uncertain antiquity that Daniel`s father at age 62 was the Revolutionary veteran of that name from Wilmington District, but this will scarcely stand scrutiny. For an aged father and two older brothers to enlist, while an unmarried 20-year-old stayed at home with two strapping teen-aged brothers to care for the farm and a fairly young mother, is simply incredible in a family as patriotic as this one. (As everyone working in genealogy knows, family tradition can often be in error. This is not to say that Daniel Sr. may not have done home guard duty at some time in the threatened Piedmont area, but even that is a presumption which demands more proof). There was indeed a second veteran named Daniel but he proves to have served from the far northeast. His existence only makes it hard to seprate their records precisely, but a few do definitely apply to Daniel II. He received payvouchers #83 and 2196 in the Wilmington District, and is grouped withJohn and William in several sites of Wilmington records. A Daniel whomust be he received a 1782 grant of land in Brunswick Co. Daniel seemsto have married a woman named Lula about 1817 for a younger wife islisted in the 1820 census, and a Fowler widow of that name appears in thecensus of 1860 aged 71, who can only only fit with him. Daniel removed toColumbus Co. with his brothers William and Richard in about 1793 when allof them sold portions at lest of their Crane Creek holdings, althoughnone of them became Columbus Co. owners until 1799. Daniel settled onSkibbow Branch, just southeast of Tabor City, NC , and William choseHuggins Creek on the opposite side of town. Here we find Daniel in the1810, 1820, but not 1830 censuses. Thomas was still living with him in1810, and in 1820 he was joined by the young woman who must be Lula. By1820 it is necessary to distinguish this Daniel As Sr. since he did nothave such a son, we conclude that junior status referred to his nephewsof the same name, The sons of William and Richard. In the Feb. 1822 termof court Daniel was drawn as a juror.
