In his application for a Revolutionary War Pension in 1841, Meshack Davis names Jesse Knighten as the Captain under whom he served in a 1781 campaign "from Salisbury to the seashore near Wilmington where they engaged in a skirmish known as the Battle of the 'Brick House'." General Griffith Rutherford is names as commander of the expedition. A supporting letter from Simeon Lewis who served with Davis also attests he was in the tour to the seashore, that they had a skirmish as what was called the "Brick House," and that "Jesse Knighten was our Captain." Said letter was sworn to 26 January 1841. The believed date for this battle is Feburary 1781, and this is supported by Waddell's "History of New Hanover County."
(2) Rowan County North Carolina Register, "Thomas Bentley of Old Rowan and Lincoln Counties, North Carolina," by James W. Miller, Jr., pg 1210, provides further evidence that Jesse served in the Revolutionary War.
The 1786 Census for Surry Co., NC: This record shows 1 white male 21-60, 5 white males under 21, and 3 white females. This indicates that there were 2 or 3 sons and 1 daughter for which their names are not known. Apparently all of these children would be from his first marriage. He also had two slaves listed.
