James Michael Orrell was born June 30 th. 1862 the second surviving son of Oliver Orrell and Margaret (McGaffey) Orrell. He was born on a farm near Vernon Indiana, probably the farm of his grandparents Mr. James Orrell and his wife Anna (Crowder) Orrell.
James was only a little over four months old when he became an orphan, when his father died of Typhoid Fever, in Bowling Green KY. while in the Union army during the civil war.
James mother Margaret re-married to Jacob C. Schnyder on 10-16-1870. Not much is known about the early life of James except that his mother did apply for a pension for herself and her two sons. When she re-married to Jacob C. Schnyder according to family legend the two boys stayed with their Grandparents because Mr. Schnyder didnt want them.
After the marriage of his mother, James uncle Harrison did apply for an orphans pension as his Guardian. There is court records at the county court house which states that begining the 6th of Jan. 1871 and going through 1882, Harrison did pay out $135.32 1/2 on James Orrell.
According to family legend anout 1877-1878 JAmes left home with his brother Albert. They caught a cattle train west and then walked the rest of the way to their uncle Thomas Orrells house which was and Christal Springs Arkansas. It was in the winter time that they traveled because according to a nephew of James Archie Orrell, James older brother had to worry about his brother freezing to death while they were on the train.
James aparrently didnt like Arkansas so he later went back to Indiana. He got as far as Hanover, Indiana where he was taken in by a friendly farmer who sent him to Hanover College. He also taught there.
Later he moved to Indianapolis where he met a nurse miss Margaret Elizabeth Thacker and was married_______. They had two daughters Mabel who married on 3-6-1909 to Samuel K. Sterns, and Burnice who married Pleasant Davis on 11-23-1913. Margaret was from Martinsville Indiana. Margaret died when Berniece was six months old of consumption.
James then moved back to Jennins County Ind. where in 1904 he was elected sherriff for four years. They lived in the court house during that time. Then later on January the eleventh 1912 James died by being frozen to death in a blizzard.
James moved back to Jennings County soon after the death of his first wife and in _______1887 he married Ophelia Wilson (widow) who had a daughter by a previous marriage. Mrs. D. C. Griffin of Newcastle Ind. Ophelia re-married after James death to William Boggs on Feb. 9th 1914.
