Letters of Guardianship
Here's a document that is rarely seen. The state of Indiana appointed Harrison Orrell guardian of his deceased brother's two youngest sons on 6 June 1871.
Oliver Orrell, Union Army soldier, died of disease on 19 November 1862 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. When his widow, Margaret McCaffrey, remarried, family stories tell of Margaret's new husband not wanting the two boys because they were Catholic. The boys, Albert and James, went to live with their grandparents. Albert ran away and went to live with his aunt, Mariah Orrell McCaslin. Oliver's brother Harrison Orrell was appointed guaradian of the two boys.
Albert homesteaded 160 acres of land in 1889 and farmed this land until his death on 31 December 1916. He was married to Nancy Jane Jack and had nine children.
James also farmed and was sheriff of Jennings County, Indiana. James was married twice and had two daughters. After a night of drinking, James was found frozen to death in a snowbank. He died on 11 January 1912 in Jennings County, Indiana.
