HIGLEY, Capt, John, the American progenitor of all bearing the name in this country, came from Frimley, Surrey, England, to Windsor, in 1666, when about 17 years of age. His father was Jonathan Higley, who died in 1664, and his mother, before her marriage, was Katherine Brewster, daughter of the Rev. John Brewster, who died in Eng. 23 Aug., 1657. They were of the lineage of the ancient Brewster family of Mayflower fame.
John Higley, born 22 July, bp. 12 Aug., 1649; m. (1) Hannah (dau. of John and Hannah Moore) Drake of Windsor, 9 Nov., 1671 (0. G. JR). He m. (2) Wid. Sarah (Strong) Bissell, dau. of Return Strong, and the grand-dau. of Rev. John Warham. Soon after his first marriage he appears to have taken up his residence upon the eastern side of "ye Great River." In 1672 Major Pyncheon hired him "to view and search for a place" for the location of a saw-mill on " Stoney River." In June of the same year he is found in the list of persons who were appointed to make some improvements upon a road upon the "east side" of the Connecticut. It is supposed that he removed with his young family for safety to the main settlement when the general order was given during the Indian troubles, in 1675, for the families on the eastern shore to remove "forthwith, with their cattle and grain, to the west side into places of best security."
