There is a marriage for John LEACH bachelor and Hannah THORNTON spinster on 13 Dec 1805 at St Matthew Bethnal Green, witnesses John AUSTIN, Mary JOWETT & James LEACH. "All we have for Elizabeth Mellish (Thornton) is that she was born in about 1792 in Hackney. I have not been able to find any of her ancestors etc. The interest in John Leach is that the Mellish family have not been able to trace Elizabeth's husband, as far as we were aware his name was John Mellish (according to Marriage certificates for her children). Also we have family correspondence that says that her husband was the son of a clergyman from Bedfordshire, it also says that they are not totally sure if John's name was actually Mellish. There is also mention on certificates that John was a merchant or a grocer. The 1861 census is the only one that shows Elizabeth Mellish not being with her family, none of the census records from 1841 show her having a husband. There is also family information that shows that something happened with her husband John about 1850 that the family would not discuss and put shame on the family and apparantly Elizabeth never forgave what happened (we are not sure what it is). I have traced all of her children and made contact with living relatives and nobody seems to know what happened and I was wondering if any of this meant anything to you or your relatives, especially as in 1861 Elizabeth Mellish appears to be living with a John, who is the son of a Bedfordshire clergyman."
