1851 aged 51, living at Burtons Brook, Plaxtol, Wrotham with his wife Sarah 45, children William T 23, Sarah A 18, Stephen 12, Frank 10, nephew John Knowles 31, visitor Ann Childres 58, annuitant born Tonbridge and four servants Hannah Winn 17 born Shipbourne, William Collyer 21 born Seal, William Bassett 17 born Plaxtol and William Williams 14 born Plaxtol.

1861 aged 61, living at Church House, Church Street, Wrotham with his second wife Rebecca A 30, children Stephen 22 and Alice M 2, and general servant Elizabeth Wakeman 20 born Plaxtol.

1871 aged 71, living at 46 High Street, Rochester with his wife Rebecca 40, in the home of his married daughter, Sarah Ann 39 and son in law Wallace Bruce Black 50, and granddaughter Ada M Black aged 5 months.

In his will dated 20 July 1875 and a codicil of 28 December 1878 he left "all that messuage wherein he then resided at Plaxtol" and the adjoining shop (then occupied by tenant Mrs Frances Burtenshaw) to his second wife Rebecca Ann Martha Mary for her lifetime and after her death to his daughter Alice Mary Martin and his two sons William and Frank. In his wife's obituary he was described as "among the best known yeomen in Kent" and generally respected, "farming his own land" and "desirous of doing good and giving enjoyment to others".
