In his will dated 20 July 1875 and a codicil of 28 December 1878 he left "all that messuage wherein he then resided at Plaxtol" and the adjoining shop (then occupied by tenant Mrs Frances Burtenshaw) to his second wife Rebecca Ann Martha Mary for her lifetime and after her death to his daughter Alice Mary Martin and his two sons William and Frank. In his wife's obituary he was described as "among the best known yeomen in Kent" and generally respected, "farming his own land" and "desirous of doing good and giving enjoyment to others".
