Kind(eren):
1841 aged 75, living at Ducks Farm, Wrotham, Plaxtol with his wife Sarah 65, children Elizabeth 25, Stephen 20, Sarah Batt 35 and her son Edward Batt 10, relationship unknown, and five servants Richard Joy 23, Susanna Patterson 20, Sarah Wake 15, James Summerfield 25 and Thomas Fowler 29.
The Martin family had lived in Plaxtol since at least the 18th century and in 1842 Thomas inherited Church House and the adjoining property (now called The Old Post Office) in the will of his relative James Martin after the death of James' widow, Mary, in 1841. Thomas rented Ducks Farm from the Baldwins since 1794. "In 1805, Francis Martin's son, James Martin, mortgaged the Lord Vane's Arms for £1100 to Thomas Martin, who lived at Ducks Farm and farmed several other Plaxtol farms. James Martin died in 1828 and, in 1842, the trustees of James Martin's will sold the property ("formerly called or known by the sign The Lord Vane's Arms") to Thomas Martin, who moved there from Ducks Farm." 1847 Is this the Thomas Martin who was a principal landowner in the parish of Wrotham mentioned in Bagshaw's 1847 History, Gazetteer and Directory of the County of Kent? Noted as "late".
